Human Resources as a Key Element in Strategic Planning

For an organization to succeed in today’s economy, it must first engage in meticulous, quality-oriented strategic planning.  This is particularly true of an organization in a competitive and highly regulated industry such as banking.  Second, the organization must integrate and maximize all of its resources.  Unfortunately, the bank human resources executive is, all too frequently, one of the most undervalued and underutilized resources available to senior management.

All strategic plans consider, in one form or another, human resources elements.  However, many plans pay insufficient attention to the contribution the human resources function can make to achieving the organization’s corporate goals.  Typically, the human resource executive is not intimately part of the strategic planning process, and the human resources function is neither understood nor respected by top management.  When that happens, a vital element of the success equation is lost.
